Defending champion Italy and the consistent Paraguay squared off tonight in an interesting match.
With this, the games from Group F have officially started. At the start, both teams took the pitch with self-confidence and the will to prove themselves with a win. At least, it seemed that way...
Even before Paraguay took the field in Cape Town, they showed that they respected the defending champion Italians, but wanted to win. Months before the official World Cup started, they expressed, with lots of confidence, their desire to beat the veterans.
They had beaten Uruguay 1-0, Brazil 2-0, and other strong soccer nations from South America, which proved their ability to upend intimidating soccer squads. The Italians had a surprisingly efficient qualification and finished the group with 24 points.
From the World Cup, we have seen that there is no sure thing no matter who's playing. Given the way the Italians defend, it set up as a tactical and slow paced affair.
These two National Teams have faced only once before, the 1950 Finals when Italy defended their title, winning 3-1.
History was on the Italian side, they haven't loss the first game in a World Cup since 1962, and had scored first versus South American teams nine times in that span.
As the match started, it was Italy, who many believe have the weakest defending roster in their history, who dominated in the first 20 minutes with a consistent attack.
Paraguay defended well, played with discipline, and waited patiently for their chance to score, which they did off of a throw-in. Cannavaro and Rossi didn't stop it, and Buffon was helpless, giving Paraguay a 1-0 lead.
The disappointed Italian squad walked off the field down 1-0 at half, and their world class goalie was sidelined the second half, due to injury.
Itally again attacked, but this time it payed off, as their opponents didn't do well on defense, Rossi scored on a missed punch out by the Paraguayan keeper.
The match finished a draw, 1-1, in tight and dynamic game.
